Lead on Monitoring, Reporting & Verification and Socio-ecological Systems

University of Bristol

Reader in Environmental Science and Policy, University of Bristol

Jo House is CO2RE lead on Monitoring, Reporting and Verification, and Socio-ecological Systems, and a member of the Hub Management Board. She is Reader in Environmental Science and Policy at the University of Bristol, co-chair of Bristol Advisory Committee on Climate Change. She has been Head of Climate Advice in the Government Office for Science, author of multiple IPCC assessment reports and inventory methods guidance, and on science advisory groups for international and national governments, science bodies and NGOs.

Jo’s research concerns land and climate interactions, including emissions of carbon dioxide from land use change (e.g., deforestation), climate mitigation potential from the land (e.g., afforestation, bioenergy), ecosystem services, and implications of science for policy.

Jo is particularly interested in ensuring the scientific credibility of monitoring, reporting and verification of greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation activities by countries under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and how wider environmental and societal impacts can also be included in MRV frameworks. The aim of her research is to provide a better evidence base for policy and sustainable action on climate mitigation targets and land-based mitigation options.
