The scientific evidence gathered on Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR) over the course of the research programme will be collated into a series of outputs for decision-makers, drawing on evidence from CO2RE and five Demonstrator projects and from our stakeholder engagement activities.

Outputs

Outputs will include synthesis reports for various audiences, a GGR evaluation framework, a portfolio of policy options and additional decision-support tools. The aim of these is to enable key decision-makers to make evidence-based decisions and to help steer the growth of significant new GGR industries in a sustainable way.

A key output of this research programme is the CO2RE Principles for Credible Removals, which allow for a holistic and harmonised assessment and comparison of different GGR methods.

The CO2RE Principles for Credible Removals

The Principles have been co-developed with a wide range of stakeholders, including GGR developers, investors, government departments, eNGOs, and the wider publics.

A first version of the Principles and evaluation criteria was published in May 2022. Based on your feedback and continued dialogue with our stakeholders, we will continue updating them annually, with the next update expected in June 2023.

A portfolio of policy options will be developed in discussion with policy stakeholders, drawing on CO2RE’s research on public engagement, economic and business modelling, and monitoring and governance considerations. The advantages and disadvantages of different policies for different objectives and contexts will be considered.

Additional decision-support tools will be developed according to stakeholder needs. A quality-assured set of data on GGR options will be produced that could be used in other applications, such as energy system modelling for generating UK emissions pathways, or in databases. This will help with the wider evaluation of GGRs in other geographies and settings. In addition, the systems models developed could be used to stress-test the robustness of investment and operations strategies at the level of individual power plants or plots of land.

• Published guidance on consequential life-cycle analysis

• Synthesis reports

• Policy report on policies enabling sustainable GGR deployment

• Tools to support stakeholder decision-making
