Biochar can draw down atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions by sequestering some of the carbon dioxide for centennial or millennial bases. Several standards already exist that seek to certify biochar as a product or as a climate change mitigation method. This report analyses the state of the biochar standards landscape, identifies their alignments and divergences, and highlights gaps where improvements could be introduced.
