Public and media engagement

Increasing public understanding and awareness of GGR has always been fundamental to CO2RE’s activities. Since the programme was established in 2021, we have organised and participated in a series of public events to engage people on GGR. Our GGR Insights webinar series [link] was also open to the public, as were days 2 and 3 of The UK GGR Event [link]. Recordings from our webinars, the 3rd International Conference on Negative CO2 Emissions and our programme events are freely available on our YouTube channel, along with other resources about our work and the science of GGR. More information about our public events is available below.

Another key aspect of our communications strategy has been to engage the media. CO2RE and GGR-D researchers have become a go-to source of expertise on GGR, with op-eds and interviews in the UK and international press. Scroll down to see a selection of our media highlights.

Public engagement events and activities

Reclaiming Hope, Removing Carbon (2026)

In June 2026, we hosted this public event at the University of Bristol Botanic Garden as the culmination of the CO2RE Arts programme. The CO2RE Artists exhibited their work throughout the garden and volunteers from CO2RE, the Demonstrator projects and the Future Leaders Network held talks, scientific demonstrations and activities to engage members of the public on GGR. Over four days, more than 1,000 visitors attended the event.

“Explore Our Planet/Archwiliwch ein planed” showcase (2024)

In October 2024, members of CO2RE and the Demonstrator projects participated in the “Explore Our Planet/Archwiliwch ein planed” showcase in Cardiff, organised by the the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Techniquest, and the National Oceanography Centre. The event engaged families, school groups and policymakers on environmental science and what we can do to live sustainably. Read more in our blog.

Goodbye Greenhouse Gas! (2024)

This event, hosted at the Old Fire Station in Oxford, invited members of the public to explore GGR through interactive scientific demonstrations, an ‘ask-me-anything’ panel, spoken word, an image competition and hands-on arts activities. It was held during the 3rd International Conference on Negative CO2 Emissions. Read our news item and see photos from the event here.

Image Competition: Visions for Greenhouse Gas Removal (2024)

In April 2024, CO2RE announced an image competition to gather images of GGR methods, technologies, and practices. The aim was to demystify GGR by highlighting what it can look like, recognise its presence in our everyday lives and environment, and explore how it can shape the future of our climate. The winners were announced at the Goodbye Greenhouse Gas! event held in June 2024. Read more and see the shortlisted and winning entries here.

The UK GGR Event (2025)

This event celebrated the achievements of the Greenhouse Gas Removals Demonstrator (GGR-D) programme and fostered debate on the future of GGR in the UK. Held over three days at the Royal Institution in London, it focused on our research, our impact and GGR innovation. Day 3 was a “Demo Day” hosted with Undaunted, which gave GGR startups the opportunity to pitch for a place on the UK’s first dedicated CDR accelerator. Watch recordings of the Day 2 sessions on YouTube, and view photos from Days 2 and 3 on Flickr.

3rd International Conference on Negative CO2 Emissions (2024)

The 3rd International Conference on Negative CO2 Emissions was hosted by CO2RE in Oxford. It brought together researchers from around the world who are working on greenhouse gas removal (GGR), as well as start-ups and the GGR Demonstrator projects who are working on different methods of removing carbon from the atmosphere. The conference proceedings are available here. Our event recap is available here.

ECR Net Zero Conference (2022)

CO2RE co-hosted the inaugural ECR (early-career researcher) Net Zero Conference in Manchester in 2022 with eight other organisations. View the agenda, slides and session recordings on the UKCCS website.

The UK GGR Event: Current Innovations and Future Directions (2022)

This event marked the end of the UKRI-funded Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR-A) programme and the continuation of its work through the Greenhouse Gas Removal Demonstrators (GGR-D) programme, which includes CO2RE. Read our event recap here
