About the CO2RE Hub
In addition to conducting research into economic policies, business model support mechanisms, the regulatory landscape and monitoring, and reporting & verification (MRV) schemes that together would help build public, investor and business confidence and incentivise deployment, the CO2RE Hub has played an important coordinating role across the GGR-D programme, fostering direct links between the Demonstrator projects, leading stakeholder engagement and outreach activities, and bringing together people and communities across the GGR landscape in the UK and internationally.
Across the programme, researchers have focused both on GGR method-specific issues and on cross-cutting issues, working collaboratively to identify common themes, co-creating harmonised methods and synthesising cross-cutting lessons on land-based GGR.
While there are remaining uncertainties and knowledge gaps, this programme has demonstrated that GGR deployment in the UK can successfully contribute to the UK’s net zero goals, and has provided insights into what is needed to scale up sustainable removals moving forward.
Key findings
- We have made a step-change in our understanding of the potential of these technologies to deliver genuine greenhouse gas removals.
- CO2RE teams have developed a suite of policy, legal and evaluation insights and methodologies that can help build up the UK’s ability to scale the most promising GGR technologies responsibly. Our researchers have highlighted options to create, or manage the lack of, sustained demand for removals needed to get the UK GGR industry off the ground and delivering reliably.
- The technical trials undertaken by the Demonstrators have revealed insights into entirely new approaches: preliminary investigations show promising results for some co-deployments of GGR in one place, e.g. biochar and peat.
